1. Addition Facts: We say “Two and one are three; two and two are four,”

 

2. Subtraction:  

Subtraction with Regrouping.

 

When subtracting all pupils, parents and teachers are requested to use the following wording.

51 take away 23 or 51 subtract 23.

 

 

We begin with the unit side  RULE: ALWAYS START AT THE TOP!

 

1 take away 3

3 we cannot do                                                                    T    U

So we rename a ten                                                             5     1

How many tens do we have now? 4                                        -2    3

How many units do we have now? 11

 

 

 

REMEMBER BEGIN WITH THE UNITS

 

11 take away 3, what have I now?                                             T   U

11-3 is 8                                                                                5    1

(Now subtract the tens)                                                           -2    3

                                                                                            2    8

4 take away 2, what have I now?

4-2 is 2

 

We had 51 and we took away 23

Now what have we left?

We have 28 left.

 

 

3. Mulitplication Tables: We say ‘Five twos are ten, five threes are fifteen’
