Céad Míle Fáilte
A Chairde, we are delighted to be celebrating the 16th World Book Day in Ireland on Thursday 6th March 2014. Over the last 16 years World Book Day has become firmly established as Ireland’s biggest annual event promoting the enjoyment of books and reading. The main aim is to encourage children to explore the pleasure of books and reading by providing them with an opportunity to have a book of their own.
The European Tree of the Year competition showcases ‘champion’ trees and allows users to vote on their favourite tree.
Ireland’s entry this year is a great white poplar that is in the grounds of Birr Castle in Co Offaly. The tree made the news, though, when it fell as a result of the storms in mid February. Nonetheless the tree remains part of this year’s competition.
Trees are an important par of the eco system and control climate by moderating the effects of sun, rain and wind.

We are very excited about beginning our Green Flag Journey in Scoil Naomh Padraig, Drumfries! The theme to achieve the first flag is ‘Litter and Waste’. We are currently implementing ways to reduce the waste in our school and have formed a ‘Green Schools committee’ to accomplish this. Our committee is made up of 4th/5th and 6th classes and we have asked parents to come on board also.Together we are reviewing the way we dispose of litter and waste in the school.
The next committee meeting will be held in the school on 28th February @9.20am
